Why After Effects for TikTok captions?
Platform auto-captions are fine for drafts. They fall short when you need brand fonts, karaoke highlights, or captions that survive a client round of copy edits. If your master already lives in After Effects, finishing captions there keeps typography and motion in one timeline.
The same vertical master usually covers TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts - so one AE caption pass can feed all three.
Safe zones and readable type
- Composition: 1080×1920 (9:16) for most short-form delivers.
- Placement: keep captions in the lower-middle third - above TikTok UI, below faces.
- Type size: large enough to read on a phone arm’s length away; prefer weight over thin display fonts.
- Contrast: light text on a dark pill, or dark text on a light bar - avoid low-contrast overlays on busy footage.
- Line length: 3–7 words per line for social pacing.
Manual caption workflow
- Create a 9:16 comp and place your edit.
- Add a text layer per phrase (or one layer with source-text keyframes).
- Time in/out points to dialogue.
- Style font, fill, stroke, and background shape.
- Optional: animate opacity or scale for punch-in emphasis.
Manual works for short spots. It becomes slow once you have minutes of dialogue or need word-level karaoke.
Faster AI captions inside AE
An After Effects caption panel such as Cuemark transcribes comp audio, builds timed native text layers, and applies styles (including word highlights) without exporting to CapCut first.
- Install Cuemark from Keyweaver Manager.
- Open your 9:16 edit comp → Window → Extensions → Cuemark.
- Generate captions from the audio, review the Text tab for names and slang.
- Pick a social-friendly preset (or your brand style), then apply as AE layers.
- Nudge lines off UI chrome if needed.
Re-styling a cached transcript usually costs no extra credits - useful when a client asks for a different highlight colour after you already transcribed.
Export for TikTok
- Burned-in captions: render H.264/HEVC 9:16 and upload the video as-is (most brand work).
- Sidecar captions: export SRT/VTT from the panel if a platform or client needs separate caption files.
- Master retention: keep the AE project so future variants (new CTA, new hook) do not start from zero.
